OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 3, 2023 – Kaiser Permanente Northern California’s hospitals are being recognized as among the top 20% of hospitals in the nation for treating common adult conditions including stroke, pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

“Our dedicated Kaiser Permanente Northern California clinical teams provide our members and patients with exceptional, safe, high-quality care so they can lead healthy lives,” said Carrie Owen Plietz, FACHE, president of Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California region. “We value the trust our patients place in us each and every day as we remain focused on providing them with the best outcomes possible.”

More than 4,500 hospitals participated in U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 Best Hospitals ratings and rankings. The annual rankings analyze hospital performance for 15 specialty care areas and 21 procedures and conditions.

“Our physicians and care teams support our patients’ needs from routine procedures to more specialized, complex needs,” said Maria Ansari, MD, FACC, CEO and executive director of The Permanente Medical Group. “We remain focused on our clinical excellence as we provide our patients and members with high-quality care and service.”

According to the report:

  • For the third year in a row, all 21 Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals are “high performing” in at least one of the 36 measures examined in the study, including the treatment of stroke, congestive heart failure, and pneumonia. The high performer designation represents the top 20% of hospitals in the nation.
  • Six Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals are ranked among the top 50 hospitals in California: The Kaiser Permanente Oakland, Richmond, Roseville, Santa Clara, San Francisco and South Sacramento medical centers are all rated among the state’s best hospitals.
  • Kaiser Permanente Vallejo hospital is among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for rehabilitation out of more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated.

This past spring, high school rugby player Tyson Wasser spent several weeks recovering from a stroke at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo. He worked alongside a physical therapist as he learned to walk again and regain movement in other parts of his body.

Wasser credits the help he got at the Vallejo rehabilitation center and the Kaiser Permanente staff with getting him back into physical shape. He was able to walk in his June high school graduation ceremony.

The remarkable recovery of patients like Wasser are one of the reasons why Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals remain ranked among the best in the nation for improving clinical outcomes of patients and members.

In its hospital analysis, U.S. News & World Report uses publicly available data such as volume, mortality rates, infection rates, staffing levels, and patient satisfaction rates, among other factors. For more information and complete rankings, visit U.S. News & World Report.
