Menopause: What you need to know

Kaiser Permanente offers a range of treatments for those experiencing symptoms.

Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Naomi Watts are just a few celebrities who have recently brought attention to menopause, a life stage that every woman goes through, but few openly discuss.

“Menopause is often surrounded by myths and misconceptions,” said Paras Farhady, MD, the new clinical lead for Menopause and Mid-life Women’s Health at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. “Kaiser Permanente is working to change that narrative by providing comprehensive care and support to members. We are working to ensure that women have the information and the resources they need to navigate this significant life transition.”

Below, Dr. Farhady shares 5 key facts that people may not know. They cover menopause in general, the changing landscape on treatment options, and Kaiser Permanente’s approach.

  1. Menopause is more than just hot flashes

When people think of menopause, they often focus on hot flashes and night sweats.

However, menopause is complex. It involves a wide range of physical and emotional changes. Symptoms can include mood swings, weight gain, sleep disturbances, and changes in sexual health.

“The experience varies from person to person,” said Dr. Farhady. “Understanding the potential impact on all aspects of health allows us to provide personalized care that addresses each woman’s needs.”

  1. Perimenopause is often overlooked

Perimenopause is the transition period leading up to menopause, typically starting in the mid-40s and lasting several years. It can be associated with irregular periods and fluctuating hormone levels. Perimenopause symptoms are sometimes more intense than those experienced during menopause itself.

“Many women aren’t aware of perimenopause until they start experiencing symptoms,” Dr. Farhady explained. “It’s important to recognize the signs early, so that we can offer appropriate treatments and support.”

  1. Hormone Therapy (HT) is safer than previously thought

Hormone replacement therapy has been the subject of much debate, particularly since a 2002 study raised safety concerns. However, more recent research has shown that HT can be a safe and effective way to manage menopausal symptoms.

Hormone therapy is not for everyone, whether it’s due to underlying medical conditions or personal preference.

“At Kaiser Permanente, we offer FDA-approved hormone therapies, including bioidentical options and non-hormonal alternatives that are tailored to each patient,” Dr. Farhady said. “It’s about finding the right balance to alleviate symptoms while minimizing risks.”

  1. Lifestyle can make a big difference

It’s well known that regular physical activity, a balanced diet, restorative sleep, stress management, social connections, and alcohol and drug avoidance can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms and increase tolerance for them.

“Kaiser Permanente strongly advocates for the integration of lifestyle medicine into menopause care,” Dr. Farhady noted. “We offer a variety of classes and health education resources that focus on diet, exercise, and stress reduction techniques. These resources empower women to manage symptoms more effectively.”

  1. Kaiser Permanente offers specialized menopause care

Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing specialized care for women going through menopause, Dr. Farhady said. In Northern California alone, there are approximately 20 menopause specialists, most of whom are certified by the nationally recognized Menopause Society.

“We have menopause specialists in every service area,” Dr. Farhady said. “Our team educates ob-gyn colleagues from around the region on evidence-based approaches to menopause care, ensuring that our patients receive up-to-date and individualized care.”

In addition to clinical care, Kaiser Permanente offers educational resources, including no-cost online seminars facilitated by physicians who are menopause specialists. In those seminars, members can learn about menopause in general and how to manage symptoms. Providers can refer members to the seminars.

“We want our patients to feel empowered and supported through every stage of menopause,” Dr. Farhady emphasized. “With the right care and information, women can navigate this life-stage with confidence.”
