Sleep Safety Begins With the ABCs

A Kaiser Permanente Northern California sleep safety campaign for babies makes life-saving knowledge for parents and caregivers easy to remember and use.

Approximately 3,500 infants die from sleep-related deaths annually in the United States. Many of these deaths are the result of babies sleeping in an unsafe environment. At Kaiser Permanente Northern California, a simple education program for parents and caregivers explains the ABCs of safe baby sleep: Babies should sleep alone, on their backs, and in a crib.   1. One important recommendation that this article did not include is that the crib or bassinet should be in the parent’s room for the first 6 months. And babies should always sleep on a firm surface without blankets or pillows.
