The East Bay Spice Strings, a group of anesthesiologists who are also friends, played classical string music recently for patients, employees and passersby, drawing a large crowd in the lobby of the busy Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center.

At the end of their 30-minute performance featuring works by Arcangelo Correli, Alexander Borodin and a waltz from the movie “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” the physician musicians received a standing ovation. The show in the lobby of the hospital was a repeat of a popular performance last summer.

All four musicians, Leila Hebshi, MD, on violin, Catherine Chiu, MD on violin, Sarah Jarjour, MD, on viola, and So Young Kim, MD, on cello, all worked together before they formed the group 2 years ago.
“We’ve known each other for 2 years, and when we figured out that we had the makings of a string quartet, we got together,” said Dr. Kim. “Not only does it bring people joy to hear us play, we get to be with each other and that’s a kind of gratitude.”
