The new San Leandro Medical Center includes the hospital, four-story medical office building, and 24-hour Emergency Department.

Kaiser Permanente Northern California took one more bold step forward in meeting the needs of members, patients, and the community when it opened the new San Leandro hospital and 24-hour Emergency Department on June 3.

The opening signaled the completion and full launch of the San Leandro Medical Center, where the hospital, ED, and four-story, 275,000-square-foot medical offices building—opened on April 7—are all under one roof.

Robert Pearl, MD, The Permanente Medical Group executive director and CEO, lives in the South Bay, and described driving by the medical center each weekday for two years, and his excitement at seeing the facility completed and ready for patients.

“We will be an epicenter here for the nation-leading quality that is known across all of Kaiser Permanente,” said Dr. Pearl. “The hospital will be the safest facility in the nation and provide exceptional medical care to people who live and work in Alameda County.”

Gregory A. Adams, group president and Northern California regional president, was similarly excited about the facility, while adding, “Kaiser Permanente at its core is our people. It is the nurses, and the doctors, and the clinicians and the others who come every day to be present for our members and to this community.”

The six-story, 425,000 square foot hospital boasts numerous features designed to help members get the right care at the right time.

Combined, the entire medical center offers:

  • An Emergency Department with 40 private treatment rooms
  • Ten state-of-the-art operating rooms
  • A Labor and Delivery Unit including 10 rooms equipped for high-risk deliveries
  • A Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • An Oncology Infusion Center
  • World-class technology, including advanced imaging equipment
  • An electronic display screen in the medical office building tracking the surgical status of inpatient and outpatient surgeries without using names, for privacy
  • Built-in automatic lifts helping caregivers to assist patients in and out of bed
  • Negative pressure treatment rooms allowing air in but not out, to isolate contagious infection
  • In case of emergency, five days of meals stockpiled and a power plant that can run for four days
  • Private patient rooms with room service, free Wi-Fi, pull-out guest beds, and the Get Well Network system patients can use for ordering food, checking which tests they will be receiving, controlling the television, and more

Integrated Care, Technology, Health-Focused Features

Together, a slew of Kaiser Permanente Northern California facility openings in 2014 heralds one of the most ambitious health care construction projects ever seen in the state.

The Oakland Hospital opens in July, followed by the Redwood City Hospital in December. The Oakland Specialty Medical Office Building opened Jan. 6.

The buildings’ timing is driven by Senate Bill 1953, which was signed into law in 1994, requiring that California hospital buildings be seismically sound.

However, the objective is to deliver high-quality, integrated care and to expand access to that care throughout the Bay Area.

The San Leandro Medical Center is built from a proven template design that maximizes natural light. Design elements include a meditation garden and art based on a cultural heritage theme with colors, textures, and designs celebrating the diversity of the Southern Alameda County communities. Its spacious cafe offers healthy meal options; a weekly farmers market will feature local, organic produce.

The new hospital and ED replace the existing Hayward hospital and ED that closed on June 3. Additionally, the Hayward-Sleepy Hollow Medical Offices and Union City Medical Offices will continue to offer a wide range of services.

The San Leandro Medical Office Building’s primary and specialty care services include Adult Medicine, Health Education, Laboratory Services, Medical Records, Member Services, Neurology, Orthopedics, Patient Financial Services, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, and Podiatry.

The San Leandro Hospital services include 24-hour pharmacy, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Infectious Disease, Infusion Center, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Oncology/Hematology, Palliative Care, Pulmonology, Radiology/Imaging, and Women’s Imaging Services.

The toast-colored medical center is clearly visible from Highway 880, and will be accessed by citizens throughout the heavily populated patch of the Bay Area.

At the pre-opening, Dr. Pearl said to the audience of Kaiser Permanente caregivers and medical center leaders: “Make this the shining star for the entire nation.”
