U.S. News & World Report awarded Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California high ratings for 2018, with Santa Clara (pictured) ranking among the top 50 in the country for kidney care and 3 others among the state’s Top 50 overall for quality of care.
The latest study of hospital care performance by U.S. News & World Report gave 16 Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals a “high performing” ranking and named Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center one of the top 50 hospitals in the country for treating kidney disease.
Key findings from the annual study, a well-known quality assessment of hospital care, include:
- Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center is ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for nephrology (kidney disease care), and one of 3 Kaiser Permanente hospitals ranked among the state’s top 50 overall.
- Kaiser Permanente San Jose and South San Francisco medical centers both ranked among the state’s top 50 hospitals.
- Thirteen Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals are rated “high performing” for congestive heart failure treatment, 8 are “high performing” for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and 3 are “high performing” for knee replacement.
- Sixteen Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals received “high performing” ratings in at least one of 25 measures for specialty and/or common care: Antioch, Fresno, Modesto/Manteca, Oakland/Richmond, Redwood City, Roseville, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, San Rafael, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, South Sacramento, South San Francisco, Vacaville, and Vallejo.
“Kaiser Permanente embraces total health, which includes highly specialized care in our hospitals,” said Janet Liang, president, Kaiser Permanente Northern California. “These top rankings are a testament to the dedication of our physicians, nurses, and team members who restore health and save lives through their expertise and compassion.”
The 29th annual study is based on an evaluation of more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide. This study is intended to help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 complex specialties, procedures, and common conditions.

Isaacs, MD, FACS, executive director and CEO of The Permanente Medical Group. “These results validate that our physician-led teams, with their evidence-based approaches, are working and provide exceptional care.”
In all, 29 Kaiser Permanente hospitals across the country were rated “high performing” for at least one of the 25 measures. Six other hospitals in Southern California were also rated among the state’s top 50 overall.
In its hospital analysis, U.S. News & World Report uses publicly available data, such as volume, mortality rates, infection rates, staffing levels, and patient satisfaction rates, among others.
