On June 4, Kaiser Permanente opened a new state-of-the-art medical office building in downtown Sacramento, becoming the only provider to offer major health care services in the city’s center.

The 6-story, 209,000 square-foot Kaiser Permanente Downtown Commons Medical Office Building is located at 501 J Street, just a block from Golden 1 Center. It offers primary and specialty care services including adult and family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, oncology, hematology, and an infusion center.

Additional services, including lab, pharmacy, radiology, optometry, member services, and a vision center, offer added convenience for downtown workers, including lunchtime hours. With Salud En Español, bilingual primary care providers deliver culturally sensitive care to Spanish-speaking members.

A Remarkable Revitalization

“Downtown Sacramento is undergoing a remarkable revitalization, and Kaiser Permanente is excited to be part of the transformation by bringing high-quality medical care closer to thousands of people who live and work in the area,” said Sandy Sharon, area manager and senior vice president for Kaiser Permanente Sacramento. “Our investment in downtown took a giant step forward with the opening of our Sports Medicine Center in Golden 1 Center in 2016 and continues with the opening of this new medical office building and our plans to build a new hospital in the historic Railyards.”

The medical office building is part of a new wave of Kaiser Permanente facilities that use technology and space to enhance the care experience and make getting medical care easier and more convenient.

Downtown Commons is 1 of 3 new Kaiser Permanente medical office buildings opened in Northern California this spring, joining the Kaiser Permanente Skyport Medical Office Building in San Jose and the Kaiser Permanente Mercury Way Medical Office Building in Santa Rosa.

“Our new Downtown Commons Medical Offices feature a true patient-centered care experience for everyone who walks into our state-of-the-art building,” said Robert Azevedo, MD, physician in chief, Kaiser Permanente Sacramento. “We put a lot of thought into making this building as comfortable and convenient as possible for patients and their families. Features include wayfinding touch screens in the lobby, lactation rooms for new mothers, calming beach scenes on the ceiling of the MRI room, and a top floor dedicated to serving patients receiving chemotherapy and other infusions while seated in massage chairs with views of the Sacramento skyline.”

Care and Convenience

The building’s location has improved geographic access, especially for the thousands of state, county, and city employees who have chosen Kaiser Permanente as their health care provider. The central location is ideal for its convenient proximity to Interstate 5, Highway 160, Highway 50, Business 80, and bus and rail transportation. The facility also includes more than 300 parking spaces for members.

Downtown Commons will initially house approximately 225 health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff. More staff may be added as needed to meet the needs of Kaiser Permanente’s growing Sacramento-area membership.

The facility features 86 doctors’ offices; 144 exam rooms; on-site café and wireless internet access for visitors; USB-powered inputs at chairs in the main lobby; free, validated parking during care visits; and more than 330 art pieces, including many from local artists

A Commitment to the Environment

The structure meets the highest environmental and sustainable building standards, including anticipated LEED Gold certification, part of the U.S. Green Building Council rating system. Environmentally friendly features include “smart” windows that lower energy use by automatically darkening to prevent glare and becoming more transparent once the direct sun passes. Water-saving features include ultra-low flow fixtures, water bottle refill stations, and drought-tolerant landscaping.
