Donating Masks, Medical Supplies to Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente Statement on Donations of Personal Protective Equipment

Kaiser Permanente is grateful for the many individuals, community groups, and local businesses that have inquired about donating supplies, such as gloves, masks, and other items. We greatly appreciate the outpouring of concern and generosity at this unprecedented time.

We are providing our staff with the medical-grade personal protective equipment (PPE) that is aligned with the latest evidence-based science, using the same PPE as other hospital systems in California and across the nation. Procured supplies help us continue to manage our medical equipment prudently and maintain an adequate pipeline so that our teams have what they need, when they need it.

We have teamed up with cross-industry partners to launch Protecting People Everywhere, an initiative powered by the HealthEquipTM app, which matches personal protective equipment and other medical supply donations with the hospitals that need them most.

Personal Protective Equipment Donations

How you can help:

To donate personal protective equipment and other medical supplies (minimum quantity of 10), visit www.health-equip.com or download the app in the App Store or Google Play. For the safety of all health care workers, donations must be new, unopened, and in their original packaging.

Vendors or manufacturers interested in doing business with Kaiser Permanente to help with the PPE shortage are invited to contact us. Please email BuytoPay@kp.org with details, and a member of our team will follow up.

In most cases, we encourage donations through our central donation process (see above), so our care teams can focus on receiving patients with urgent health care needs.

We don’t want to discourage donations, so curbside donations dropped at a medical facility will be collected and securely stored by local staff.

Appropriate items to donate

  • Unopened N95 respirators and surgical masks
  • Unopened packages of disposable gloves
  • Unopened containers of hand sanitizer
  • Unopened containers of disinfectants and disinfecting wipes
  • Packaged, unused protective goggles
  • Unopened swabs for collecting screening samples
  • Unopened gowns (surgical and isolation)
  • Face shields

Homemade masks

Public health experts do not consider homemade masks to be effective personal protective equipment inside our clinical environments or for those caring directly for people with COVID-19.

However, cloth face coverings such as homemade masks are recommended for personal use in the community when leaving your home for groceries or other essential items — or to give to friends, family, and neighbors for similar purposes.

Please see our step-by-step instructions for making masks (also available in Spanish and Chinese).

You can also watch this instructional video. Kaiser Permanente collaborated with volunteer Suzy Furrer of Apparel Arts on this pattern.

The safety of our employees, patients, and the community is our top priority. We are grateful for the support of the community, and as we closely monitor the progress of this illness, we will adjust our donation practices accordingly.
