On May 21, 2 state-of-the-art Kaiser Permanente medical office buildings — one in San Jose and one in Santa Rosa — open, continuing the new wave of medical offices designed to enhance the care experience. The third facility, in Sacramento, will open on June 4. The buildings all use technology and space to make getting medical care easier, more convenient, and focused on choice.  Learn more below. 

Kaiser Permanente Skyport Medical Office Building – San Jose

The 4-story, 153,000-square-foot Kaiser Permanente Skyport Medical Office Building is located at 1721 Technology Drive near the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. It offers a wide range of primary care and specialty health care services, including adult and pediatric care, and women’s health. The facility also features orthopedics and sports medicine, dermatology, podiatry, and peritoneal dialysis. There’s a pharmacy, lab, optometry, Vision Essentials center, and a Healthy Living education and resource center.

“As the South Bay population continues to grow, our Skyport facility will serve the health needs of a large and diverse community of Silicon Valley workers and others living and working in the greater San Jose area,” said Chris L. Boyd, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara senior vice president and area manager.

“The Skyport facility features larger common areas as well as express check-in kiosks and exam rooms designed to allow members to better interact with their caregivers,” explained Susan Smarr, MD, physician in chief, Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center. “For example, most exam rooms feature wide-screen video monitors to enable face-to-face telemedicine consults with Kaiser Permanente specialists in other locations, as well as translation services.”

Providing ample space to meet the needs of Kaiser Permanente’s growing membership, the Skyport Medical Office Building will house approximately 450 health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff.  The facility boasts 103 doctors’ offices, 171 exam rooms, an on-site café, wireless internet access for visitors, and charging stations for electric cars.

Decorative touches reflecting the facility’s proximity to San Jose’s international airport include aircraft motif wallpaper and light fixtures that resemble propellers. The canopy over the entrance looks like part of an aircraft wing.

Kaiser Permanente Mercury Way Medical Office Building – Santa Rosa

The 3-story, 87,300-square-foot Kaiser Permanente Mercury Way Medical Office Building is located at 2240 Mercury Way. It offers a wide range of primary care services, including adult family medicine, pediatric care, and women’s health. The facility features an on-site pharmacy, lab, and imaging services, as well as a Healthy Living education and resource center. It also houses dermatology, foot and ankle surgery, and physical therapy. 

“As the Santa Rosa area continues to recover from the devastating fires that swept the North Bay last year, Kaiser Permanente is proud to be part of that recovery, and is investing in the health of the community with this new medical office building,” said Judy Coffey, RN, Kaiser Permanente Marin-Sonoma senior vice president and area manager.

The Mercury Way Medical Office Building also features innovative design, including large common areas, and several exam rooms with wide-screen video monitors that allow direct telemedicine consultations.

The Mercury Way Medical Office Building will house nearly 200 health care professionals, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, technicians, and administrative staff.  The facility has 60 doctors’ offices, 95 exam rooms, 8 procedure rooms, an on-site café with outdoor patio, wireless internet access for visitors, and charging stations for electric cars.

A Commitment to the Environment

Both structures meet the highest standards of environmental and sustainable building, including anticipated LEED Gold certification. The solar panels covering the parking lot of the Skyport building will provide 75 percent of the annual electrical power needed by the facility; those at the Mercury Way building will provide 100 percent of the annual electrical power needed. Both have “cool roofs” that reflect heat away from the buildings, saving energy; ultra-low flow fixtures that reduce water use; and landscape irrigation that uses recycled water. The facilities also have high-tech windows designed to lower energy use: They automatically darken to prevent glare and become more transparent once the direct sun passes.
